چکیده

Geckos of the genus Rhoptropus are small diurnal lizards occurring in arid regions of Namibia and Angola, and are not well studied relative to other desert lizards. Rhoptropus afer has a field metabolic rate significantly lower than that of other desert lizards, but comparable studies have not been carried out in any other Rhoptropus species. We examined the field metabolic rate, water turnover, foraging behavior, and thermal biology of Bradfield's Namib day gecko, Rhoptropus bradfieldi, in the Namib Desert. This species occupies rocky habitats and feeds on arthropods via a sit-and-wait strategy. We found that it has a field metabolic rate (140 J d 1) that is 26% that of a typical desert lizard of the same size (540 J d 1). We also found that R. bradfieldi had a relatively high water influx rate (0.07 ml d 1) for its low rate of energy turnover, and suggest that a significant proportion of this water was sourced from fog. Active body temperatures varied between summer (32.7 ± 2.4 C) and autumn (34.4 ± 2.5 C), but in both seasons R. bradfieldimaintained high and stable body temperatures while active. Our study supports the idea that a minimal energy requirement could be widespread within Rhoptropus geckos. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mitochondrial Phylogeny of Namib Day Geckos (Rhoptropus) Based on Cytochrome b and 16S rRNA Sequences

We examined phylogenetic relationships among the Namib day geckos (genus Rhoptropus) using DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) and 16S ribosomal RNA genes. Maximum-parsimony analysis of the cytb, 16S, and combined (cytb/16S) datasets each recovered an identical single most-parsimonious tree, revealing two well-supported clades: (1) Rhoptropus afer 1 Rhoptropus bradfield...

Divergence in locomotor performance, ecology, and morphology between two sympatric sister species of desertdwelling gecko

The functional and evolutionary implications of morphological diversification have been addressed for several groups of vertebrates. Although the mechanisms of gecko adhesion have received considerable attention, little is known regarding locomotor performance of geckos in nature, and how this might relate to morphological diversity. In this study we examine locomotor performance of two sympatr...

Review of the morphology, ecology, and distribution of geckos of the genus Cyrtopodion, with a note on generic placement of Cyrtopodion brachykolon Krysko et. al., 2007

The genus Cyrtopodion is the most widely distributed of the four gekkonid genera of the angular-toed geckos that inhabit Pakistan and the contiguous Palearctic Region (Szczerbak & Golubev 1996), from the Indus Valley to the eastern borders of the Caspian Sea. Longitudinal rows of trihedral tubercles characteristically line the dorsum of these angular-toed geckos. They primarily inhabit arid bad...

Increased capacity for sustained locomotion at low temperature in parthenogenetic geckos of hybrid origin.

The evolution of parthenogenesis is typically associated with hybridization and polyploidy. These correlates of parthenogenesis may have important physiological consequences that need be taken into account in understanding the relative merits of sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction. We compared the thermal sensitivity of aerobically sustained locomotion in hybrid/triploid parthenogenetic rac...

Light level impacts locomotor biomechanics in a secondarily diurnal gecko, Rhoptropus afer.

Locomotion through complex habitats relies on the continuous feedback from a number of sensory systems, including vision. Animals face a visual trade-off between acuity and light sensitivity that depends on light levels, which will dramatically impact the ability to process information and move quickly through a habitat, making ambient illumination an incredibly important ecological factor. Des...
